Pottery - Beginning

Mondays: 5:30 - 8:30 pm (ongoing)
This class is designed for people new to working with clay and those with previous experience many years ago. Cathryn will be demonstrating hand building techniques and follow a project list. Students will receive a materials list the first day of class. Everyone will need to accomplish these basic skills before moving onto more complex projects. No previous knowledge of clay is necessary. Tools, clay types, kiln firing and other aspects of clay will be covered in detail. Since ceramics takes time to develop students will be required to commit for a minimum of one month.  Clay needs to be purchased at the local supplier in Chico. Minimum of six students. New classes start every few months.

$10/ session

Class billed in 4-week increments and can be taken multiple times for continued learning.

Pottery - Intermediate to Advanced

Mondays: 2 - 5 pm
Students must commit to one month, and have a basic knowledge of ceramics. This is not a drop in class. It is ongoing, and meets every Monday. Pottery making takes time, often projects take two-three months to finish. Kilns are fired when there are enough pieces to fill them. More advanced levels of pottery will be covered including hand building, wheel throwing, glazing, and kiln loading.

This class will be exploring a few surface decoration techniques for the coming year. These techniques can add a very unique look to pottery and make each piece a personal statement. Some of the choices will include slip or underglaze painting which adds color and patterns. These can be simple lines or elaborate paintings of landscapes, people, or animals. Another choice will be under or overglaze decals. These are already printed and just need to applied to the surface. Many commercial ceramic factories rely on decals for most of their decorations. We may even explore lusters which contain gold and silver and add a sparkle to any piece. These are just a few of the exciting choices for making personalized art pottery and widening design options.

All:
$40/4-week sessions

Class billed in 4-week increments and can be taken multiple times for continued learning.

The end goal is to further the artist's own personal style. The visual tools that we will become familiar with are: understanding atmospheric perspective, building depth of field and a better grasp on color theory. The artist will be able to accomplish these skill sets by painting skyscape subjects in a series.
